Path relinking is a general search strategy in which the search space is explored by looking for additional optima near two known local optima. During the process of 'linking' or constructing a path between two local optima, the algorithm can check the intervening area for other optima. Path relinking is the basis for the Reeves/Yamada PFSP algorithm [12], which we denote by pathrelink. 0, respectively. In the case of some speech and image processing tasks, such task decomposition was done manually. While manual design and a fixed ensemble architecture may be appropriate when there are experienced human experts with sufficient prior knowledge of the problem to be solved, it is certainly not the case for those real-world problems where we do not have much prior knowledge. Tedious trial-and-error processes are often involved in designing NN ensembles in practice. We have developed evolutionary ensembles with negative correlation learning (EENCL) for designing NN ensembles automatically based on negative correlation learning [20, 21, 22] and evolutionary learning [23, 13,24].

We have combined clustering and Pareto optimization in a single evolutionary design algorithm [27] . The objective of this is to prevent the system from converging prematurely to a local minimum and to encourage a number of different designs that fulfill the design criteria. Our approach is demonstrated in the domain of digital filter design. Using a polar coordinate based pole-zero representation, two different lowpass filter design problems are explored. The results have been compared to designs created by a human expert [27].
